Revolt of 1857
- The revolt of 1857 occurred during the governor generalship of lord canning
- Political :Avadh was annexed from the Nana sahib in 1856. Satara ,jhansi , sambhalpur , nagpur were annexed due to doctrine of lapse
- Economic : heavy taxation , discriminatory tariff policy against Indian
- Socio religious : prohibition of sati ; legalisation pf widow remarriage
- Military discrimination : British introduced Enfield rifles whose cartidges have a greased cover made of pork and beef sparked off the revolt
- On 29 march 1857, mangal pandey , an Indian sepoy of 34 native infantry killed two British officer on parade at Barrakpore . Latter he got arrested and hanged
- On 10th may 1857, mutiny started at merrut. The sepoy refused to used enfield gun and revolts . The mutiny spread throughout the uttar pradesh and sepoys marched to delhi
- In delhi , they seized the city and proclaimed Bahadur shah II as Shehenshah -i- Hindustan
- Within month revolt spread to different part of india ( mainly in North , central , western India)
- Delhi - Bahabur shah ll and Bakht khan ( commanding General)
- Kanpur - Nana sahib and Tantiya tope
- Jhansi - Rani laxmi bai
- Lucknow - Begam hazrat mahal
- Faizabad - Maulavi Ahmadullah
- Jagdishpur(bihar) - kuer singh , Amar singh and kuwar singh
- Allahabad - Liyaqat Ali
- Bahadur shah ll deported to Rangoon were he died with his sons on 1862
- Nana sahib , khan bahabur khan , begum hezrat mahal escaped to nepal
- Tantiya tope was captured and executed on 15th april 1859
- Rani laxmi bai died in the Battle field
- Kuer singh wounded during the revolt and died in april 1858
